College tuition is expensive, so our family researched to find a lower-cost solution. First, we had to find a regionally accredited university that would allow us to transfer up to 90 credits of the 120 required to graduate at that University. This university would also have to accept the transfer of alternative credit. Alternative credit is covered in the (Dual College Credit Saves Homeschoolers Work, Time, and Money section).
Next, we needed to accumulate 90 credits at a low cost per unit. Our lowest-cost credit units were from CLEP testing because Modern States gives study materials and free test vouchers to take CLEP tests at no cost. Our other alternative college-level classes cost $12 to $40 per credit.
After we had earned 90 transfer credits we applied to the University, sent in the transcripts, and verified the credits were placed in our college registration files. Important - some universities will not let you continue to add transfer credits once you have enrolled in a degree-seeking program. Check this rule to make sure, and if this is the case, you will have to get all transfer credits turned in before you enroll.
After all the transfer credits registered at the University, we were accepted and could start taking our courses. We had to pay full tuition for the final 30 college credits and complete the required courses to receive our diplomas. It took just under a year to finish the final 30 credits but there was no rush, we were just excited to finish college and graduate.
If a student uses this alternative credit method to complete college the total tuition will typically come in at less than $15,000. For example, if the first 90 credits cost $25 and the final 30 credits cost $400 the degree cost is $14,250 ((90*25)+(30*400)) much less than $48,000 (400*120) that a regular our-year student would have to pay. These are just examples; your costs may vary.
