Just as remote work is favored by many employees, remote college was a good choice for us. An online college was our best choice for several reasons. One of the reasons was that at age 15, we had completed 90 college credit units using homeschool dual college credit (explained on this website), so completing the final 30 credits at home was just a continuation of what we had been doing all along. Completing college at home was a familiar choice: we could concentrate on our studies and not have to learn a new environment on campus. Online study meant that we were not restricted to local options and could choose the most appropriate online college anywhere in the United States. Our college budget was low as we did not have to pay for additional shelter, food, or transportation. This affordability means that we do not have student loans to pay back. Online students receive the same diploma and transcript as on-campus students, which makes remote college perfect.
Remote college is like homeschooling because you can keep a somewhat flexible schedule, while also similar to remote work because there are assignment deadlines, virtual meetings, discussion groups, and sometimes group projects. Most online students we have encountered are working adults who have returned or started college to complete a degree while having a job and raising a family. This environment was favorable for us because our fellow students were hard-working, mature adults with good time management skills. In discussion forums, our fellow adult students would share real-life work challenges, which created empathy. To stay well-rounded while working on our bachelor's degrees, we exercised to keep fit, worked on our tennis game, and did project activities, like starting a website and gourmet cooking.
