Starting Homeschool

Preschool at home is voluntary and informal, but it is a time when children can learn at great strides. Preschoolers can learn to read letters and signs. They can start mathematics by counting Popsicle sticks and then adding and subtracting them. For a preschooler, learning is fun, not work. And it is a great time to bond with Mom and Dad.

In most states, kindergarten is when official school begins, and there are two ways for a child to continue studying at home. One method is to create a non-accredited homeschool, and the other is to enroll your students in an Accredited Online School or Charter School taught at home. Both of these approaches have advantages, as shown below.

Non-Accredited Homeschool: The students are taught at home by a parent who acquires school lessons from various sources in the forms of videos, textbooks, workbooks, and online worksheets. The parent chooses what courses to teach, gives grades, keeps records, and produces and signs the transcript and diploma. The parent has to operate this school and meet the state homeschool regulations. Our homeschool was non-accredited and this is what we know.

In Non-accredited homeschools the parents have complete responsibility to educate their children. With this increased parental responsibility the school benefits by having greater flexibility than accredited schools. They can focus on academic subjects, life skills, and values. With homeschooling, Christian families can place a higher emphasis on bible studies while rural families can emphasize agriculture and farming. Other families may be more STEM-orientated and focus on science, technology, engineering, and math. With homeschooling every part of life is a lesson, budgeting, auto repair, contracts, community involvement, charity, friendships, purchasing decisions, music, languages, sports, and religion are all part of the learning program.

The non-accredited homeschool can add, subtract, and modify subjects to concentrate on the most useful areas that fit the student's needs and the modern workplace. For instance, when we were toddlers, employers focused on international manufacturing and trade. Hence, our parents later found ways for us to learn Spanish, mathematics, and computer coding to build a good technology base. We were also interested in geography and world affairs because our parents were.

Our homeschool operated with flexibility and efficiency. With only two parents and two students, our school was designed to teach the necessary skills for success and then close down. We finished college early because our school was non-accredited. This was in contrast to traditional schools which are perpetual organizations designed to keep teachers, administrators, and others employed.

Accredited Online Schools and Charter Schools taught at home: The parents enroll the students in an official school program that facilitates study at home. The online school provides all the materials, and assistance, grades the student, and keeps the student's records. When students complete the program they receive a transcript and diploma from this school. The school is supervised by an accreditation agency or has a charter from an overseer organization. The curriculum will be the same or similar to a traditional school.

The advantage of Accredited Online Schools or Charter Schools taught at home is the student is learning at home, and there is less work for the parents or teachers. We assume these schools are all incentivized to keep students enrolled for as long as possible, so students will stay in high school until age 18.
